Farmers markets are popping up left and right in local communities. But what exactly does the market offer? Farmers markets commonly have fresh vegetables, meats, fruits, baked goods and other goodies. Farmers markets also provide many benefits for you, as well as the communities around you.
Eat Your Fruits and Veggies
Be protected. Antioxidants protect your body from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals that kill or injure cells. At the farmers markets look for foods high in antioxidants such as blueberries, artichokes, strawberries, onions, and eggplant.
Eat what tastes good. Meats and produce often taste better because they are fresher at farmers markets. More often than not, farmers market products contain less pesticides and chemicals. And, did you know, U.S food travels 1,500 miles on average before you ever see it on your plate (CUESA)? While the food you buy from a farmers market may have been picked just hours and a few miles from where you bought it.
What does buying local really mean? Buying local is beneficial to the community you live in. When you buy local produce it helps boost the local economy and also supports the surrounding farmers. Farm lands disappear every year but by buying from farmers markets it helps preserve the remaining farmland.
Be adventurous. The beauty of farmers markets is you never know what is going to show up. Whatever produce is in season is what you can likely expect to find at the farmers market. You can tantalize your taste buds with fruits or vegetables you have never tried before and expand your culinary horizons.
