Keep fit after 50

2014-09-08 |

Losing weight after 50 can be tough, as your metabolism slows as you age. In fact, after 50 your metabolism slows as much as five to eight percent every decade. Getting rid of those last few pounds may be harder than you thought, but it is not impossible to lose weight. Ready to drop a few pounds? You can do it!

  • Eat Right: Cut down on empty calories and substitute in healthy snacks such as fruits and vegetables or whole grain products. Keep your body balanced by regularly eating breakfast within an hour of getting up. Avoid skipping meals.

  • Small Meals: Eat several small meals during the day. Exercise alone is not enough if you are eating too much at every meal.

  • Exercise: Try to get 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. Take a walk with a friend or join some of the exercise classes Gardens of Wilbraham offers.

  • Sleep More: Restless nights may get you up to eat to stay fueled during the day. Getting enough sleep at night prevents the endless snacking during the day.

Weight after Menopause

Many women notice after going through menopause that they have gained 10-15 pounds in the abdominal area.  Before, during and after menopause, avoid foods high in sugar, fried foods, red meats, and cheese. Stay active, and work to keep your diet on the right track.
